Today in Kindergarten we all did a sequencing activity. After reading a story we had a discussion about what happened in that story at the beginning, the middle and at the end of it. The children were then given four pictures and asked to put them in order. When they finished this job they came up and read us their story.
We are thinking of doing a fall community walk to Marshall Springs in Fish Creek on Friday, October 9 with the morning class. We would require 5 volunteers from each class. If you have a valid police security clearance and would be willing to volunteer on that day, please send your child's teacher an e-mail by Monday, October 5. Reminders: Terry Fox run for the PM Kinders on Friday October 2nd No school October 12th Thanksgiving Please send in an apple if you haven't already done so. We are still collecting fall items. Have a good evening The Kindergarten Team

We had a fun day in Kindergarten today! We saw a bunch of smiling faces as we all had our pictures taken :)
Mrs. Osadec and Mrs. Decottignies' classes talked about observations...what an observation is and how important it is to look at things very carefully. The classes had a lot of practice as they observed an apple and very carefully sketched it, noting all of the details on the apple. Observations are also being made as we go through all of our Fall collections that you are bringing in...it has been great sorting, discussing and sketching all of the wonderful finds! Mrs. Bridle's class continued our exploration of apples. We compared different kinds of apples and looked at the many colours that were on our apples. We also looked at a crab apple and wondered "Why are crabapples called crabapples?" We also talked about the sound that the letter A makes and worked in our visual journals. Yesterday, we went to the Learning Commons and signed out a book for the very first time. In the afternoon all of the classes had Gymsic...one of the highlights of the week for sure :) We continued looking at our Fall collections and during centre time many of the students explored in detail with magnifying glasses and then sketched what they saw. Today the afternoon classes came home with information about the Terry Fox Run, which will be this Friday, October 2. We are looking for volunteers if you are able to help and have your police clearance. Have a great evening and we look forward to seeing all of your kinders tomorrow! The K Team TOMORROW IS PICTURE DAY! Bring your smiles
In the big room today we talked about the letter Aa and did some work in our sketch books. We wrote the letter, made an A with aluminum foil, and drew some things that started with an Aa. When we were done that job we solved a mystery! The teacher's read a story called "The Little house with no windows or doors that has a start inside". If you want to see if you can solve the mystery the story is online. Have and apple handy! Today, Mrs. Bridle's class read a book called, "The Seasons of Arnold's Apple Tree." We talked about all the different changes that happen to a tree throughout the year. We wondered why apples are red in the fall and not any other season. We talked about the letter A and the sound that an A makes. The children that brought their apples to school today sketched them in their journals. We learned that when you sketch something, you need to look carefully at it and look for the details. After they sketched their apple, they coloured it. If your child didn't bring in an apple today, please send one in tomorrow. Today in Mrs. Smith class we learned about the letter Aa. We learned how to print Aa and the sound it makes. During centers we tried crab apples and did and apple craft. We also mowed the lawn in our community center for the first time. It was really fun! Thanks to all the parents and children who went on a scavenger hunt this weekend! It was very exciting to get all of your treasures back. We will be sorting them and using them to do an art project in the upcoming days and weeks. The Terry Fox run is tomorrow morning for the AM Kindergarten children. Please dress appropriately for the weather and have running shoes on.
The pm Kinders will do the Terry Fox run on October 2nd. This morning the Kindergarten classes drew portraits of themselves. Some of them were small and some others were large. you will have to ask to see them when you come in for interviews. In the afternoon Mrs. Decottignies and Mrs. Yacyshyn's classes did self portraits but Mrs. Smith did them the other day so her class worked on what belongs in a community. Learning Commons Today we visited the learning commons and were able to sign out a library book. Your child can return their book when they are finished with it, however it is not due back until next Thursday. A reminder to please send in your family photo if you have not yet done so and to return your Entertainment book if you do not wish to purchase it. If you are keeping the book, if you could please submit payment in the envelope provided. Thank you :) Have a great evening!! The Kindergarten Team Today Mrs. Decottignies and Mrs. Osadecs' classes talked about our neighbourhood and made replicas of their own houses to put on our community wall, alongside their family photographs.
The afternoon classes had gymsic...their fun time of movement and music in the gym! We also had our first fire drill this afternoon! We learned how to line up quickly and quietly and follow the teacher out of the building when the fire alarm goes off. A reminder to please send in your family photo if you have not yet done so and to return your Entertainment book if you do not wish to purchase it. If you are keeping the book, if you could please submit payment in the envelope provided. Thank you :) Have a great evening!! The Kindergarten Team The kindergarten classes were busy today completing a project called 'Me and a Tree". The students had to draw a picture of themselves, a picture of a tree and then print any letters and numbers that they know! They worked very hard on this!
The afternoon classes had a chance to visit the new Learning Commons...what an amazing space!! The students got an overview of all that is in the Learning Commons, besides books. There is so much to do including building on the Lego wall, working at the iPad stations and creating masterpieces at the art centre. Next week we will learn how to sign out books from the Learning Commons. If you have any seeds left over from your gardening this year, we would love to use them in our Kindergarten garden. Remember to please book your parent-teacher conferences on-line. The conferences are this Thursday and Friday. There will be no school for students this Friday. Also, a reminder that snacks must be NUT FREE! We are a nut-free school, because of allergies. Hello Kindergarten Families!
We had a great day in kindergarten today. This morning, Mrs. Bridle and Mrs. Decottignies' classes went for our first orientation in the Learning Commons. Did you know that the Learning Commons is so much more than JUST a library? We can go there to sign out and return books, but there are also many different learning centres in there. We learned about the LEGO wall and the iPad centre today. We will all be getting our "LC card" which is how we will be able to sign out books. We will be going back to the Learning Commons next week to learn how we sign books out. Mrs. Osadec's class will be going to the Learning Commons on Monday for their first orientation. We have been talking about names and the importance of our names. Today we did a project with our names...please make sure that you take a look at our finished products when you come in for interviews next week. Did you know that a person's name is their most prized possession? We have been counting letters in names and comparing the number of letters in each person's name. Please see below for information on Marshall Springs Middle School September 17, 2015 Dear Evergreen School and Woodman School Parents/Guardians: Re: Construction update for Marshall Springs School (Evergreen Middle School) The Calgary Board of Education is currently building several new schools around the city, including the new Marshall Springs School in Evergreen which was announced by the Provincial Government in February 2014. Over the past few months it has become apparent that the targeted opening date of September 2016 will not be met. The forecast construction completion date for this project has now been revised to March 2017 with a school opening date to be determined. There are a number of reasons for the delay: the school is on a small site that required a specialized design and it took longer than normal to complete an approved design; as well, initial responses for the design/build tender that were received were unsatisfactory and substantially over budget and could not be accepted. We are currently awaiting building permit approvals. This project has gone to tender and we hope to award a construction contract later this month. The plan is to begin construction by October 2015. A public meeting will be held in the fall after the construction contract has been approved and awarded. We will continue to update your community on the approved school development and construction schedule. For information and updates on the progress of Marshall Springs Middle School, visit our website: http://www.cbe.ab.ca/schools/building-and-modernizing- schools/Pages/evergreen-middle-school.aspx. Sincerely, Sydney Smith Carrie Edwards Director, Area V Director, Planning & Transportation Enjoy the beautiful fall weather this weekend! See you on Monday. The Kindergarten Team AM KINDERS TOMORROW
This morning the Kindergarten group has gym-sic. When we returned to the classroom some grade 4 friends visited our class to teach us how to recycle. We learned that plastic containers need to be washed out before they are put into the red bin. Paper goes into the blue bins and if we have juice boxes we need to squeeze the extra juice into the sink and throw out straws in the garbage before we put them into the yellow bins. In the afternoon Mrs. Decottignies and Mrs. Yacyshyn's classes practiced their coloring and cutting skills while working on some fall leaves that we will use for a song that we have learned. In Mrs. Smith's class we worked on self portraits, the children were very proud of their drawings. We used pastels to colour our drawings and will be finishing them on Monday. The children were very proud of their work. Please send in a family picture if you have not done so Have a good evening The Kindergarten Team Today in Kindergarten we talked about our family and drew a picture of who lives at our house.
